Excellence in Teaching Finalists

Four Calgary Board of Education educators have been named finalists for the 2016 Excellence in Teaching Award.

These educators, along with 16 other finalists province-wide, will have access to $4,000 for professional learning. They will also receive certificates of recognition and commemorative pins. In addition, their schools will receive monetary rewards and certificates of recognition. Award recipients were also honoured at a reception, dinner and awards presentation this month.

There were 30 semi-finalists and 20 finalists province-wide for the 2016 awards. The CBE is also proud to have one other
semi-finalist named for this award. Karen Cleveland is a Learning Leader at Royal Oak School. She will receive $1,500 for professional learning opportunities.

Since 1989, the Excellence in Teaching Awards has provided students, parents, colleagues and community members with the opportunity to nominate outstanding teachers and principals for recognition. More than 10,000 nominations have been submitted and more than 500 educators have received awards since the program started. Cindy Palmer
Assistant Principal
Crossing Park School

“Ms. Palmer has been a powerful influence in my life because she took the time to show me that I mattered and that she cared. I think she deserves this award because without her, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.”

Robert Slade
Learning Leader
Colonel Irvine School

“All of his students love him and often describe him as ‘awesome,’ ‘the best,’ ‘caring,’ ‘creative,’ ‘he believes in us,’ and ‘he pushes us to be our best, then pushes harder.’ Mr. Slade expects the best from his students and provides the same to them, always motivating, encouraging and cajoling, often with humour in performing their best.”

Nicole Bezugley
Principal
Prince of Wales School

“Nicole is the type of leader that never stops – she constantly strives to achieve the best for all students and is always looking for ways to ensure she is meeting the needs of ALL students. Nicole is innovative and creative at championing a successful approach to supporting all students throughout the school.”

Enali Bouchard
Learning Leader
Lake Bonavista School

“Enali has a natural gift for recognizing, celebrating and building on each student’s strengths and learning styles while encouraging risk taking and personalized goal setting specific to each student. She seamlessly integrates each student’s unique qualities to be part of the whole – that is her classroom. No student is left behind and everyone feels truly valued and respected.”
