Exceptional & Special Needs
Physical or Medical Disabilities
We provide excellent programming for students with exceptional and special needs. Every student has unique needs, so we work with students, parents and community organizations to personalize the support for each child.
Students with physical or medical disabilities and average cognitive abilities are served in their community schools. We will adapt programs, provide assistive/adaptive equipment, facilitate access to the school environment and arrange for therapeutic services, if required. Medical support is contracted for students with special health needs.
Intensive Rehabilitation Classes - Medically Fragile, Brain Injured or following Serious Illness or Injury
We also provide short-term intensive rehabilitation classes to k-12 students when they have a major change in their abilities because they are diagnosed as medically fragile, brain injured, requiring acute rehabilitation following surgery or traumatic illness. We also educate students with social, emotional and/or behavioural challenges and who require diagnosis, assessment and possibly initial treatment.
Each student will have individualized academic classes while enrolled at the school. Teachers work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team that may include:
- psychiatry
- psychology
- physiotherapy
- occupational therapy
- speech/language therapy
- social work
- nursing
- recreation therapy
This time-limited intensive treatment occurs at the Alberta Children’s Hospital with the goal of returning students to their community schools as soon as possible.
