Status: Complete

Decision December 2016 | Calgary Board of Education administration shared a the accommodation decision for the Area IV Spanish Bilingual and French Immersion programs with parents in a letter on December 15, 2016.

In consideration of a realistic estimate of the time needed to address the CBE and City of Calgary requirements to ready the building and site, as well as the parent/guardian feedback collected with respect to a mid-year move, Scenario I will be enacted for the Spanish Bilingual program in the 2017-2018 school year with no mid-year move. Students in the Spanish Bilingual program from kindergarten through Grade 6 will relocate to Glenmeadows School for the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year.

For the 2017-2018 school year, kindergarten to Grade 5 students enrolled in the French Immersion program, will attend Westgate School. This means children beginning kindergarten and students currently attending kindergarten at Rosscarrock will attend Westgate. Grade 5 students currently at Westgate will attend Bishop Pinkham for Grade 6.

Reason for Engagement

Westgate School, which offers French Immersion and Spanish Bilingual programs, is exceeding capacity and will require overflow school locations for 2014. There is an opportunity to consult these school communities as we work on solutions in this quadrant of the city.

Our goal is to get feedback on information, alternatives and decisions by consulting with the public throughout the process. We will keep you informed, listen to and acknowledge concerns and aspirations and provide feedback on how public input influenced the decision.

The CBE makes decisions about changes to school designations, including grade configurations, by following our guiding principles. Your input may influence the possible options considered and final implementation plan.

Decisions on any attendance area or grade configuration changes will be made by CBE administration in conjunction with the area director and the director of planning & transportation.

If you have questions about this community engagement project, please contact the school principal or Area Office.

Status: Ongoing

In January 2014 the CBE made the decision that the Area IV French Immersion K-9 program would remain at Westgate and Bishop Pinkham schools while the Spanish Bilingual program relocates to Glenmeadows and A.E. Cross schools. The expected date when Glenmeadows would be available to the Calgary Board of Education has been pushed back over the past two years.  Current information is the Calgary Arts Academy will move to their new location by January 2018, which allows the CBE full access to the site and the building.

The Calgary Board of Education held an open house on Nov. 17, 2016 for parents to provide feedback on scenarios and to share their ideas, perspectives and concerns.

Until Glenmeadows School is ready for student learning, a contingency plan needs to be developed for the 2017-18 school year for the Area IV French Immersion and Spanish bilingual students from kindergarten to Grade 9.The exact grade configurations for both the French Immersion and Spanish Bilingual programs and the commensurate locations will be communicated by Friday, December 16, 2016.

Decision November 2014 | Calgary Board of Education administration shared a plan on November 29, 2014 at two information sessions. The plan going forward is for a kindergarten to Grade 9 solution that accommodates both international language programs. The French Immersion program will be housed at Westgate and Bishop Pinkham schools and the Spanish Bilingual program at Glenmeadows and A.E. Cross schools.

As we move forward with this plan there are short-term changes that need to occur. For the 2015-2016 school year, kindergarten students registering for either the French Immersion or the Spanish Bilingual program will be accommodated at Rosscarrock School. The table below indicates where students in both programs will be designated for 2015-2016.
