David Stevenson, Chief Superintendent of Schools, and members of CSSAC
The Chief Superintendent’s Student Advisory Councils (CSSAC) include Grade 9 and 12 representatives from middle, junior, and high schools across the city. These student leaders met with Chief Superintendent David Stevenson once a month for the 2016-2017 school year.
Throughout the year, CSSAC discussed many issues with Chief Superintendent Stevenson, including technology, mental health, high school transitions, safe and caring schools, and student leadership. Chief Superintendent Stevenson and other system leaders consulted with this group so student voice was a part of the decision-making process in the CBE.
Student voice has been a focus for this council throughout the year, and the student members have noted how being listened to, and listening to other students’ perspectives from other schools impacted their learning. Thomas F. from Langevin School explained, “The biggest thing to me is that what we said actually made a difference, and that what we said mattered. What I’ve learned is that what we say and what we do can actually benefit everyone and the greater good.” Morgan M. from William Aberhart High School agreed, adding that students have more power to influence their lives and schools than they think they might: “Being here helped me find a voice to be able to share my ideas. In the future, it would be great for more students to know that they have the ability to speak up and be a part of solving problems.”
CSSAC members took their role in representing the students of the CBE very seriously. Diksha K. from Lester B. Pearson High School explained, “This council has pushed me to reach out to other students at my school so I can represent my entire school body’s perspectives, not just those of my friends.” CSSAC members would like the entire CBE student body to know that it was an honour to serve them.
