Building & Modernizing Schools

School Projects

With the tremendous increase in Calgary's population in the last five years and many families deciding to live in new suburban communities, our need for new schools has never been greater. We also need to modernize many of our existing schools, many of which are more than 40 years old, to meet the learning needs of 21st century learners.

The first step in building or modernizing a school is receiving funding for the work. Funding for CBE school construction and modernization projects is solely granted by the Alberta Government. Annually, we provide Alberta Education with a list of our building and modernization priorities, along with every other school district in the province. This list of priorities is part of our Three-Year School Capital Plan, which is approved by the Board of Trustees.

The Three-Year School Capital Plan contains information on your community, including whether your community is listed, its ranking, how the rankings are determined and the breakdown of each project’s ranking.

See Criteria for School Capital Planning Priorities for details on how we rank projects.

 Modernizations

High schools collaborate to personalize student programs

Our modernization plans are based on a fiscally responsible allocation of resources to provide enhanced facilities and increased learning opportunities across the CBE.

Our high schools work together, providing students access to specialized facilities. See Career and Technology Studies and Knowledge & Employability Pathways by high school facilities.

All students will continue to have a “home” school that offers all core curriculum courses and provides many co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.

The modernizations at James Fowler, Lord Beaverbrook and Forest Lawn high schools will increase the flexible program options that high school students can access. Providing a variety of CTS and K&E occupational courses at high schools across Calgary gives our students enhanced opportunities to complete a program that is of interest to them and may be part of their intended career path.

 Chinook

Changes to Programming and Site Locations | 2018-19

Chinook Learning Services is the Calgary Board of Education’s provider of high school upgrading, ELL/LINC and continuing education (professional development and corporate training).

Chinook Learning Services has moved out of Viscount Bennett and Erlton campus. The CBE did not receive government funding to maintain these facilities, which are at the end of their life cycles. We determined that moving Chinook Learning Services into existing and operating high schools, that have available space, would enable us to continue offering some Chinook Learning Services programs. With the move, Chinook Learning Services changed the scope of programs they offer due to the current use and space constraints at the new locations.

New Chinook Locations What You’ll Find at this Location
Lord Beaverbrook High School High School Upgrading
James Fowler High School High School Upgrading
Forest Lawn High School ELL/LINC Programs
Lord Shaughnessy High School (Career and Technology Centre) Continuing Education – professional development courses
Lord Shaughnessy High School (Career and Technology Centre) Registration and Administration Offices

Chinook Learning Services will continue to provide a welcoming, safe and caring environment in the new locations for students to be successful in their learning and complete their courses. At James Fowler and Lord Beaverbrook High Schools, a Chinook Learning Services assistant principal along with other Chinook Learning Services staff will be available to support students and answer questions. Students will be supported in multiple ways.

High School Upgrading

We encourage interested students to contact Chinook Learning Services at 403-777-7200 to speak with someone about available upgrading options. Students over 20 may have options to take upgrading courses through other local adult learning organizations if Chinook Learning Services is not able to accommodate them.

Continuing Education
Chinook Learning Services will continue to offer professional development courses at Lord Shaughnessy High School along with corporate training through Continuing Education. Online personal development courses will also be available, however classroom-based personal development courses will no longer be offered.

Please visit our Questions & Answers page for more details on the changes described above.

Chinook Questions & Answers

Background

There are several reasons these changes are necessary now. While relocating Chinook Learning Services programs has been discussed for years, due to various factors the CBE has been unable to move forward. For example, we needed to know how the building and modernizing of so many K-12 schools would impact the space available. Additionally, with the opening of Nelson Mandela High School in the north and Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School in the south (Sept 2018), learning spaces in our system have opened up to accommodate Chinook Learning Services programming and students. Now that the options are known, the decisions have been made.

 Modular Classrooms
