Curriculum Overview

Programs of Study

Curriculum is outlined in provincial programs of study, which is determined by Alberta Education. It identifies what students are expected to learn and do in all subjects from kindergarten to Grade 12. You can find the current programs of study on the Alberta Education website.

The Calgary Board of Education does not decide what is taught in our schools. However, our teachers decide how the curriculum is taught in their classrooms.

New Curriculum Development and Implementation

Note: Current curriculum is in effect until the new curriculum is approved for implementation.

In 2016, Alberta Education along with the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA)  announced the simultaneous development of K-12 curriculum in six subjects including:

  • Language Arts (English and French)
  • Mathematics
  • Social Studies
  • Science
  • Arts
  • Wellness (physical education and health)

They also committed to ensuring that Francophone and Indigenous perspectives would be considered and reflected in the new curriculum.

The new curriculum will continue to give Alberta students a world-class learning experience and prepare them to be life-long learners who can apply their skills and knowledge with flexibility, creativity and resiliency.

Some CBE schools, along with schools from across the province, will participate in field testing the new draft K-4 curriculum in the 2019-20 school year.
