Annual Education Results Report (AERR)

Each year, an Annual Education Results Report (AERR) is prepared for Alberta Education, providing a comprehensive account of performance for the previous school year. The AERR outlines progress on priorities and outcomes as it relates to the CBE’s Education Plan.

Detailed results of the 2021-22 school year are available in the Annual Education Results Reportas well as a Summaryof the results.

Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs)

Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs) are administered annually to all Alberta students in grades 6 and 9. These standardized tests reflect the essentials that all Alberta students are expected to achieve, regardless of school choice or location.

PATs help:

  • determine if students are learning what they are expected to learn
  • report to Albertans how well students have achieved provincial standards at given points in their schooling
  • assist schools, authorities and the province in monitoring and improving student learning

The tests occur in January, May and June for English and Français/French language arts, math, science and social studies.

Some Grade 9 students write PATs in January of each year.

Grade 9 achievement tests based on the Knowledge and Employability programs of study in English language arts, math, science and social studies are also administered.

Student Learning Assessments (SLA)

SLAs are a beginning-of-the-year assessment. Information that teachers gain from SLAs helps inform the design of responsive learning experiences and support students’ next steps. Both CBE and Alberta Education encourage schools to complete administration as close as possible to the beginning of the year to maximize its value as formative assessment and as a component of the individual teacher’s initial assessment of their class. CBE has determined to leave the choice to administer SLAs up to individual teachers for the 2022-23 school year.

The Grade 3 SLA will be available to teachers as a tool to use at their discretion. Teachers may do one, some or all of the components of the SLAs.

The definitive guides to specific directives, guidelines and procedures for the SLAs are in the documents posted on the Alberta Education SLA website.
