Over the weekend of April 11-13 the Forest Lawn High School Dance Team participated in the Dance Evolutions Dance Festival at Rockpointe Church in Bearspaw AB. The team competed their Jazz Dance “Hit the Road Jack” and their Contemporary dance “Wild” in the Junior Division and received gold medals, the “Most Outstanding Performance Award” as well as the “Most Outstanding Choreography” Award for both of these dances. They competed their Hip Hop dance “Vivrant Thang” in the Intermediate Division and were award a High Gold medal and the “Most Outstanding Performance Award”.

Two team members, Ashley Nadeau and Jehad Kalaf also competed their solos.  Ashley competed her “Aurora Act 1 Variation” from Sleeping Beauty in the Advanced Ballet Division and was awarded a High Silver medal and Jehad competed his contemporary solo in the Junior Division and was awarded a High Gold medal, the Most Outstanding Performance Award and a $50 cash prize.

At the end of the weekend the top twenty numbers were invited back to compete in the final dance off. We are happy to announce that “Wild” and “Vivrant Thang” both qualified for the finals! In an incredible feat of athleticism and determination the team danced their way to the top and claimed first prize in the Junior Division for their contemporary piece “Wild” AND first place in the Intermediate Division for the hip hop piece “Vivrant Thang”. Jehad Kalaf was also awarded a special scholarship from the adjudicators to attend a three day contemporary dance convention this summer. A huge congratulations to Elise Janz the choreographer of “Wild”, Jehad Kalaf, and the entire FLHS Dance Team. The dance team coaches (Kelsey McMahon and Elise Janz) would like to thank Edgar Reyes and Katherine Burrowes of illFX for choreographing “Vivrant Thang” as well as the Forest Lawn High School Parent Advisory Council for helping to fund our team.
