A group of students from John G. Diefenbaker High School recently returned from a European trip, which included visits to Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery, the Anne Frank House in Holland, and the former Nazi Concentration Camp Sachsenhausen outside of Berlin, Germany.
At Groesbeek, the students held a commemorative ceremony laying a wreath and honouring the sacrifices of the over 2,300 Canadian buried soldiers who laid down their lives for the liberation of the Netherlands during World War II.
At the Anne Frank House and Sachsenhausen, students learned first-hand about the horrific consequences of extremism and discrimination and the need to speak out against oppression and injustice. Many students commented that visiting such historically significant sights was very powerful and moving and promised to share their experiences with fellow classmates.
