Mind over Metal camp attracts CBE students

Nov. 01, 2016

Like playing with fire? Interested in working with metal? Look no further than the CBE’s first Mind over Metal summer camp

Twenty students aged 12-15 from CBE schools took part in the summer camp held July 4 – 8, 2016, at the Career and Technology Centre and taught by teachers Travis Boyce and Cliff van Boven.

Campers were exposed to basic welding and metal cutting skills and techniques while they completed a variety of projects. The Canadian Welding Association Foundation (CWA) covered all costs for the camp including facilities, instruction, materials and personal protective equipment. Boilermakers Local 146 should also be thanked for the financial and volunteer contributions they made.

The camp was one of many across the country sponsored by the CWA Foundation designed to introduce youth to the welding profession.

“The camp was awesome! I learned lots about welding. I am now taking welding in high school” said camp participant Logan G.

Several students from the camp have enrolled in the welding program at the Career and Technology Centre as a result of participating in the camp.
