CALGARY — For the fifth year the Western Canada High School Leadership Committee will be supporting the Brenda Strafford Society Adopt a Family programme. The Brenda Strafford Society is for families fleeing domestic violence.

Eight groups of students each pay to “adopt” a tree (which covers the cost of the tree) and decorate them.  Thursday, December 8 during the lunch period, the judging will be open. Voting is done by donation, and the tree that raises the most will win.

After lunch the trees will be carefully wrapped and delivered to the families at the Brenda Strafford Centre.  We also deliver a container for decorations and a tree storage bag to each of the families that sign up so that our gifts will last for many years to come.

In order to make this a very special holiday season for these families in need, the whole school community has come together in a variety of events to raise money and gifts.  The initiative includes encouraging students and staff to donate money or bring in new toys and gifts for the children and women living at the Brenda Strafford Centre.

“We are proud that the staff and students of Western Canada High School are helping make Christmas extra special for some of the deserving families in our city,” says Western Canada High School Principal Martin Poirier.

These activities are part of the Giving Tree initiative, organized by the Western Canada High School Leadership Committee. This student leadership group is focused on connecting with and supporting the community through a variety of fundraising initiatives.

Media are invited to the noon-hour tree judging.
