CBE Relationship with School Councils

Oct. 17, 2014

The Board of Trustees made a decision recently about the CBE’s relationship with the Calgary Association of Parents and School Councils (CAPSC). This decision has generated questions from school councils and parents about the role of our Council of School Councils (COSC).

COSC is comprised of school council chairs or designates from all CBE schools, members of the Board of Trustees and representatives from CBE administration. Through COSC, every single one of our school councils is given the opportunity to meet with us directly. The Board has planned six COSC meetings this school year to work together, share information, discuss concerns and plan for the future.

The purpose of COSC is to allow for effective interaction between the CBE and its school councils. There are no fees for school councils to participate in COSC. Through COSC, the CBE can focus on effective, two-way dialogue with our school councils about school and student learning issues.

We look forward to connecting with parents and school councils at COSC meetings throughout the year. We will be talking with school council members at our next COSC meeting on Oct. 29 about how they may serve as parent stakeholders in the future. In addition we will be offering an updated presentation on assessment and reporting.

The dates for the remainder of the meetings are November 27, January 29, February 26, and April 23.

Parents are important partners in public education, and school councils play a vital role in sharing the voice of parents with CBE leaders. Through our ongoing work together, we look forward to achieving great results for our students.
