Unique Pathways & Off-campus Education

Over​​view

In partnership with The Educational Partnership Foundation (TEPF) and Alberta Carpenters Training Centre, this program is an introduction to working in the carpentry trade. The curriculum will be on skill development in both carpentry and scaffolding with a focus on awareness and safety on the job site.  

Students will be introduced to the skills required to start their apprenticeship safely and with basic knowledge of the trade and be work ready:  

• Safety including AB Fall Protection and Mobile Elevated Work Platform 
• Carpentry Fundamentals & Basics 
• Scaffold Fundamentals & Basics 

Students will develop a base level of skill, safety and knowledge that will assist them to be effective apprentices in the Carpentry Trade or in the craft of Scaffolding. The combined skills learned in this class with experience of on-the-job training will give students the confidence and understanding to build future skills required to be successful on the job and in their apprenticeship.

• Learn about on-going opportunities and potential employment opportunities 
• Taught by experienced instructors who are connected to industry and support students in making meaningful connections to career pathways

Student E​​lig​ibil​​ity

Open to CBE high school students who: 

• Are in grades 11 or 12 during the program 
• Minimum 16 years of age 
• Are able to lift 50lbs (22.68kg) 
• Have a strong interest to explore a pathway in carpentry 
• Are excited about taking relevant industry training 
• Have completed the following pre-requisite courses: 
• HCS 3000 
• HCS 3010 
• CSTS 2020 

Consideratio​​ns

• Students are expected to be in attendance each day of the program 
  
• ​If enrolled in this course, students are not permitted to take other summer school courses due to the substantial time commitment to be successful.
• Students are expected to wear the Personal Protection Equipment (PPE): 
• CSA approved 8” steel-toed boots (must have the CSA green triangle on boot) 
• Safety clothing that pertains to the industry such long sleeve shirts, cotton pants, coveralls, etc. 
• Long Sleeve Shirts are to be worn in the Scaffold Shop 

Program Delivery​​ an​d L​ocation

• This course is delivered in person at Alberta Carpenters Training Centre (#10, 1305 - 33 Street NE Calgary, AB T2A 5P1)
• Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the Alberta Carpenters Training Centre
