2015-2018 School Capital Plan Information on Southeast High School

A new high school is required in the far southeast. The southeast sector is the fastest growing area in the city and is expected to increase approximately 38,800 - 42,000 persons over the next five year time frame.

All high school students residing in the southeast communities, north of Highway 22X, including McKenzie Lake, Douglasdale/Glen, McKenzie Towne, New Brighton, Copperfield are designated to Lord Beaverbrook High School. These communities have a build-out population of 72,500 persons and currently have more than 1,300 students attending CBE high schools. Three of these communities are early in their growth cycle and student numbers will continue to be in this range or greater over time.

There are approximately 400 high school students residing in the southeast communities, south of highway 22X, including Cranston (designated to Lord Beaverbrook High), Auburn Bay, Walden (designated to Dr. E.P. Scarlett High) and Mahogany (designated to Henry Wise Wood High). These four communities have a build-out population of 83,200 persons. Auburn Bay, Mahogany and Walden are in the early stages of development while Cranston is approximately 56 per cent built-out. High school student numbers will increase significantly in these communities in the coming years.

The southeast high school is planned to be built on a 25-acre site located in the Seton community near the South Calgary Health Campus. A future city recreation centre is planned to be located on the same site as the high school. A build-out population of 60,000 - 70,000 people can generate 1,800 students in Grades 10-12. Student accommodation plans and designated communities will be determined based on the number of students in nearby communities in the months prior to the school opening.
