COVID-19 and Spring Break

This message was sent out to parents/guardians on Thursday, March 25.

During the spring break, Alberta Health Services will continue to work with the CBE to ensure school communities are notified if any students may have been contagious with COVID-19 while in school. A general notice identifying the class and/or courses and dates of exposure will be sent to the school community once it is confirmed by AHS.

You do not need to notify the school if your child receives a positive COVID-19 result over the break. Alberta Health Services will be notifying the CBE of all positive cases based on their contact tracing work. The CBE will still follow our notification process after receiving case information from AHS.

Over the winter break, AHS was experiencing delays and a significant backlog in contact tracing and notifications. At the time, the CBE supported contact tracing with our pre-alert process. This is not the current situation and contact tracing and positive case notifications are coming from AHS in a very timely manner.

If the positive case is later identified as a variant of concern, Alberta Health Services will follow up to ensure all close contacts are identified and notified.

As COVID-19 cases continue to rise in our community and in our schools, we urge you and your family to continue following all current health measures. These efforts will help to reduce the impact of COVID-19 on our schools when we return on April 6.

Dr. Dina Hinshaw, the province’s chief medical officer of health, has also issued spring break guidance to Albertans. This includes a strong recommendation against interprovincial travel, as well as a reminder not to travel within the province, or gather indoors with anyone other than your household cohort.

More detailed information and guidance is available in this short spring break video posted on the Alberta government website.

Thank you, and we wish you a safe, relaxing and enjoyable spring break.
